If you’ve bought, or are planning to buy, solid hardwood furniture, you’re in for a big investment. So it makes sense to do all you can to preserve the value of your furniture. And this is why you’ll find Tips on Hardwood Furniture Care Part 1 helpful.
Better Care = Better Looks, Value and Longevity
Unlike synthetic materials like plastic and vinyl, wood is a natural substance. So wood is vulnerable to other natural elements such as chemicals, and to natural forces such as heat and UV light. This means if you take poor care of your furniture, it might begin to look worn and lackluster in a shorter time than it should. Or, you can take great care of your hardwood pieces. And enjoy their luster, great looks and awesome performance for a long time to come.
Tips on Hardwood Furniture Care Part 1
Here are some things you can do to extend the life and vitality of your solid hardwood furniture.
1. Routine Usage
As a general rule, cover the areas of hardwood furniture which you use repeatedly, such as on your dining table, coffee table, end table and nightstand. For example, on the dining table, you might wish to use a tablecloth and/or placemats. Similarly, position felt pads under your lamps on your end tables and nightstands. Also, use coasters to protect the finish from water marks.
2. Dusting and Cleaning
Regular maintenance – including dusting and cleaning – can limit or eliminate any deterioration of your hardwood furniture.
Dusting. Keeping your furniture dusted – like a couple times a week – is the best way to keep it looking shiny. A soft cloth or a feather duster works best. Or, if you prefer to capture the dust, use a lambswool duster or a damp terry cloth.
Cleaning. Wipe up spills promptly using warm soapy water, if necessary. Make sure to wipe the area until it’s dry. To clean polished hardwood surfaces, all you need is a soft cloth that’s dampened with mild, soapy water. If you decide on using a cleaning product, make sure it’s nonabrasive. Also, use the cleaning product first, then follow with cleanup using the damp cloth.
What’s more, if you opt for using furniture polish, use it sparingly. Because it tends to build a film on top of the finish that’s already on the furniture. With that said, a good annual cleaning will help protect the finish of your solid wood pieces.
